Part 4: Sustain

Transfer ownership of processes as needed

For most initiatives, as you move from planning to launching to sustaining, you will need to transfer responsibility between different individuals or teams. Most of this has already been identified in your Sustainability Plan; now it’s time to execute on that plan. And of course, adapt where needed.

For all projects

Review your Sustainability Plan and connect with each person who is taking over a task or responsibility. Make sure they have what they need to be successful. Reach out frequently, then occasionally, to confirm that the transfer of responsibility has been successful.

Communicate the conclusion of the initiative to teams and stakeholders

It’s time to bring this open initiative to a close by putting the finishing touches on your common fact base, thanking your project team, and managing your stakeholder expectations.

For all projects

Take one last look at your common fact base, and make sure your success metrics are available. Answer any lingering questions and review them through the eyes of a newcomer. Does it tell the story of how this initiative began, progressed, and concluded? Revise accordingly.

Send a thank you note to your project team, sponsors, key stakeholders, and anyone else who offered feedback or contributed. Let them know about any transfers of responsibility and where they can provide ongoing feedback, if appropriate.

Give RewardZone points or other forms of recognition to those who exceeded your expectations and helped to make the initiative successful.

Additional notes

Standard complexity

If everything has gone well, no further work is needed. If you face ongoing resistance or criticism, see "More complex" below.

Less complex

No further work is needed.

More complex

Identify elements that may be revisited in the future, and the conditions for doing so. Share your timeline or criteria for revisiting the entire initiative, if possible. This will help reassure those who fear that you are underestimating risks or downplaying concerns.

Reflect and share what you learned with others

Think back to where you started and how much you have learned from this initiative. Help others gain experience and confidence when using this field guide. Offer your ideas for how to simplify or improve the process.

For all projects

Highlight your use of the Red Hat Open Culture Guide and offer guidance to others. This raises awareness of this resource and allows others to benefit from your experience. Share your story, share your feedback.
