株式会社コンピュータ・ニュース社は、昨年１０月より全国の主要なパソコン販社９社３１６店舗（２０００年９月現在）のPOSデータを集計した販売統計データベース「BCN Market View」を開始した。INDICATORは、このBCN Market Viewの実売データを採用したマーケティング・レポート。同レポートによれば、ターボリナックス ジャパン株式会社が第２位（２９％）、Kondaraプロジェクトのディストリビューションを手がけるデジタルファクトリ株式会社が第３位（１１％）と続き、国内のLinuxディストリビューションでは上位３社の売上が小売マーケット全体の約８０％を占めている。
レッドハットは、最新の機能を積極的に盛り込むことでLinuxディストリビューションの流れの作ることで知られる。レッドハット以外のディストリビューションにおいても、レッドハットのLinuxを参考にしながら自社のディストリビューションを製作するレッドハット系と呼ばれるディストリビューションがLinuxの主流となっている。そのため、レッドハットは米国において約７０％以上のシェアを持ち、日本でも売上の伸びが期待されていた。新バージョン7Ｊの投入により、日本でのレッドハットのシェアも着実に伸びてきたことが実証され、世界的にレッドハットの優位性が確実なものとなってきた。
Red Hat Linux 7Jには、プロフェッショナル・サーバーと呼ばれるバージョンがある。Red Hat Linux 7J好調の理由は、この売上が予想以上に伸びていることにある。同製品の価格は、2万9,800円と他社の同等製品と比較して、約１万円程度安いうえ、機能的にも最新のカーネル２．４への対応や世界初の国際化対応のｇｌｉｂｃ２．２の採用など、話題性にも事欠かない。さらに、Ｗｅｂサーバー構築のための１２８ビット暗号化セキュリティ機能の充実等も、同バージョンの魅力となっている。
１０月６日の発売当初、Red Hat Linux 7Jは多くのバグが指摘されたが、その後約１カ月の間にすべての重大なバグが解決された。レッドハットでは、すでに店頭に並ぶ製品がバグのない改定版に置きかえられたことも売上好調の大きな要因とみている。

IDCの調査によれば、ここ2年で有料のLinuxほど出荷が急速に伸びたサーバ・オペレーティング・システムはないという。1999年は、Linuxの出荷量がサーバ・オペレーティング・システム市場の24.6％を占め、1998年の15.8％から大幅に上昇すると予測されている。IDCは、現在最も普及しているのはRed Hat Linuxで、米国Linuxユーザの68.7％が採用しているという数字を挙げている。また、調査会社のNetcraft, Inc. (www.netcraft.com)によれば、2000年5月現在、公開Webサイトの36％がLinuxベースのオペレーティング・システムで運営されており、公開Webサイトのなかで最も高い人気を持つという。IDCの調査では、Linuxサーバに関する投資の40％がインターネット関連アプリケーション向けで、インターネットにおいてLinuxサーバは揺るぎない地位を確保しているという。 IDCは最後に、2002年までに、5,500万台以上の携帯型およびノートブック型情報端末が出荷され、2005年までに情報端末の出荷はPCを上回るだろうと予測している。レッドハットは、Linuxベース・アプリケーションの需要の高さに加え、業界リーダーたちと数々の提携を結ぶことで、Compaq、Computer Associates、Corel、Dell、Hewlett-Packard、IBM、Intel、Netscape、Novell、Oracle、SAPなど、業界をリードする数多くのソフトウェア、ハードウェアベンダーからオープンソースの支持を得ている。
