한국레드햇은 SK텔레콤이 플랫폼 리노베이션 (Platform Renovation) 프로젝트의 일환으로 진행하고 있는 서버 교체 작업에 레드햇 엔터프라이즈 리눅스(RHEL)를 공급하였다. SK텔레콤은 지난 2007년부터 안정적인 서비스 운영과 효율적인 자원 활용을 위해 솔라리스를 비롯 AIX, HP-UX, Tru64 등의 노후화 된 유닉스 서버를 리눅스로 교체하는 작업을 시행하고 있으며 현재 약 150여대의 서버를 RHEL 기반으로 운영하고 있다.
한국레드햇은 이번 마이그레이션을 통해 SK텔레콤의 서버 운용비용(OPEX)을 1/3 수준으로 절감시켰다. 또한 RHEL은 타 OS에 비해 유닉스 시스템과의 상호호환성 및 연계성이 높아 기존의 사용자들이 시스템을 변경하는데 드는 시간을 최소화하고, 벤더종속으로 인한 패키지, 상용애플리케이션 비용 절감의 효과를 제공했다.
한편 한국레드햇은 이번 서버 교체 프로젝트 이전에도 지난 2006년 SK텔레콤의 음악 포털 사이트인 ‘멜론(Melon)’ 의 메일서버와 검색엔진서버에 RHEL을 공급한 바 있다. 이 프로젝트에서 RHEL은 유닉스 서버 대비 운용비용 절감 효과를 가져왔으며 500만 건의 메일발송시간을 30시간에서 4시간으로 단축 시키고, 검색속도 또한 4배 빠르게 개선하는 등 획기적인 성능을 발휘하였다.
SK텔레콤 플랫폼 본부의 윤종필 팀장은 “유닉스에서 리눅스로 마이그레이션을 함으로써 TCO 절감 효과를 가져왔다. 또한 오픈 플랫폼의 유연성은 사용자의 다양한 요구에 신속히 대응할 수 있다”라고 교체 배경을 밝히며 “앞으로도 RHEL과 같이 안정성이 검증된 오프소스 소프트웨어 도입을 늘릴 계획이며, 특히 최근 주목 받고 있는 오픈소스 기반 웹 애플리케이션 서버인 제이보스 등을 고려하고 있다”고 말했다.
