이번 사업에서 레드햇은 블레이드 서버에 RHEL 5를 공급했다. 경찰청은 기존에 ‘윈도우 서버 2000’을 기반으로 시스템을 운영하였으나 정보량의 증가에 따라 정보 관리 방식을 서버 관리 방식에서 로컬 분산 자료 관리 방식으로 변경하여 이를 위한 운영체제를 오픈소스 기반의 제품으로 개선한 것이다.
특히 도입 서버중 3분의1은 동일한 데이터를 여러 대의 장비에 중복 저장할 수 있도록 디스크를 병렬로 처리하는 RAID로 구성되어 전체 시스템의 처리 속도가 약 20~30% 가량 향상되었다. 또한 RHEL 5 는 소스코드가 공개되어 있는 오픈소스 소프트웨어인 만큼 버그 수정 및 기능 최적화에 제약이 없으며, 기존 시스템 대비 매핑 데이터의 멀티 프로세싱 기능이 우수해, 결과적으로 안정성과 유연성이 개선되어 시스템 개시 이후 현재까지 24시간 무중단 서비스를 제공할 수 있었다.
이번 정보화 사업에 도입된 RHEL 5 는 서버 및 스토리지 가상화를 지원하는 한편 전세계 3,000여개 이상의 애플리케이션과 호환성을 제공하고 국제공통평가기준(CC) 인증의 EAL4+ 등급을 획득하는 등 높은 보안 수준을 지니고 있어 웹 서버와 애플리케이션 서버, DB 서버, 파일/프린트 서버와 같이 다양한 용도로 널리 사용되고 있다.
한국레드햇의 김근 대표는 “최근 전자정부 시스템 구축이 활성화 됨에 따라 합리적인 예산으로 최대의 효율성을 도출해낼 수 있는 오픈소스 소프트웨어 도입에 대한 문의가 급증하고 있다.” 며 “특히 공공 기관의 경우 독점적인 제품을 제공하는 특정 기업에 종속되게 되면 균등한 접근성을 제공하지 못하는 것은 물론 예산 편성에도 문제가 있기 때문에 공공 기관의 오픈소스 도입은 꾸준히 증가할 것으로 예상한다”고 말했다.
한국레드햇은 지난해 한국정보통신기술협회에서 시행하는 GS인증을 획득하는 한편 행정안전부, 도로교통안전공단, 국세청 등에 리눅스와 제이보스를 공급하는 등 공공 기관의 오픈소스 도입 확대를 위한 영업 전략을 확대하고 있다.
