행복나눔재단은 최근 ‘SK텔레콤 대학생 자원봉사단 써니(SUNNY)’의 홈페이지 리뉴얼 프로젝트를 진행하는 과정에서 기존의 오라클 웹로직을 제이보스 WAS로 변경했다. 마이그레이션은 약 4개월에 걸쳐 진행되었으며 구축 후 현재까지 다운타임 발생 없이 무중단 서비스를 제공하고 있다.
이번 마이그레이션에 공급된 제이보스 WAS는 전세계 J2EE 어플리케이션 서버들 중 가장 많이 사용되고 있는 제품으로 순수 자바로 설계되어 있어 요구되는 메모리 용량이 작고, 착탈 가능한 인증모듈로 구성되어 사용자가 필요로 하지 않는 기능을 제거할 수 있도록 하는 점이 특징이다. 또한 EJB, JSP/Servlet, 웹 서비스 등 다양한 범위의 J2EE 1.4 서비스들을 제공하는 한편 클러스터링, 캐싱, 영속성 서비스 같은 엔터프라이즈급 서비스를 플러그 앤 플레이 방식으로 지원한다.
행복나눔재단은 대학생들의 자원봉사 참여에 대한 관심이 높아짐에 따라 회원수가 급증하였고 이에 따른 홈페이지 리뉴얼을 결정했다고 밝히며, 리뉴얼 과정에서 유저 인터페이스를 개선하고 적극적인 자원 봉사 프로그램 전개를 위해 회원 동향 및 사업 개발에 필요한 데이터 관리영역을 전문화 하기 위해 보다 유연성이 높고 지원 범위가 넓은 제이보스로 교체 하였다며 마이그레이션의 이유를 밝혔다.
또한 재단은 라이선스 비용을 지불해야 하는 독점 소프트웨어 대신 서브스크립션 계약 방식의 오픈소스 소프트웨어를 선택함으로써 비용 절감의 효과를 거두었다. 독점 소프트웨어의 경우 초기 구입 비용 외에 추가 비용이 소모될 수 있는 반면 서브스크립션 계약 방식은 일정한 예산 내에서 검증된 기술 지원을 제공받을 수 있는 이점이 있다.
행복나눔재단 써니(Sunny) 사무국의 이상현 팀장은 “나눔을 실천하고자 하는 대학생들이 보다 쉽게 자원봉사를 접할 수 있도록 하고 재단 차원에서도 효율적이고 정확한 데이터 관리를 통해 다양한 프로그램을 개발할 수 있도록 하는데 주안점을 두었다”라며 “제이보스는 이러한 요구에 가장 부합하는 솔루션이었고 오픈소스 기반의 제품이지만 전문 벤더의 체계적인 지원을 받을 수 있기 때문에 믿고 선택할 수 있었다”고 말했다.
