한국레드햇은 최근 인텔이 '인텔 제온 프로세서 5500 시 리즈’를 발표한 이후 서버 업체들이 연일 신제품을 출시하고 있는 가운데 유닉스 서버를 이용하는 기업 고객들이 급속도로 리눅스 기반 환경으로의 전환을 검토하고 있다고 밝혔다.
리눅스로의 마이그레이션을 검토하는 이유로는 벤더 종속성이 높은 고가의 장비를 구입할 필요없이 하드웨어의 선택권이 넓어지며, 유닉스 환경에 비해 응용 프로그램의 작동 속도가 빠르고 소유/운영비 용을 약 40%까지 절감할 수 있다는 점을 들었다. 또한 레드햇 엔터프라이즈 리눅스는 국제공통평가기준(CC) 인증의 EAL4+ 등급을 획득하고 있어 유닉스 기반에서와 동급의 안정성 및 보안을 제공하며, 기존의 유닉스를 관리했던 인력들이 리눅스에 쉽게 적응할 수 있다는 점도 마이그레이션의 이점으로 작용한다고 밝혔다.
실제로 레드햇은 지난 1월 레드햇 엔터프라이즈 리눅스 5.3(RHEL 5.3)의 주요 업그레이드 내용을 발표하며 차세대 프로세서 지원에 대해 자사의 성능 관리 부서에서 비 감사로 진행된 내부 조사를 공개한 바 있다. 조사에 따르면 인텔 제온 프로세서 5000 시리즈 기반의 서버에 RHEL 5.3를 설치할 경우 상용 프로그램은 1.7배, 고성능수치연산 프로그램은 3.7배의 성능 향상을 기록했다.
한국레드햇의 김근 대표는 “유닉스 의존도가 높은 국내 시장에 인텔 제온 프로세서 5500 시리즈 기반의 서버가 등장하며 업계에 크고 작은 변화가 일어날 것으로 예상하고 있다.”며 “특히 성능과 안정성 면에서도 높은 신뢰도를 얻으며 미션 크리티컬 분야에도 리눅스 도입이 점차 확대되고 있으며 에너지 고갈에 대한 위험이 점차 가중되는 상황에서 ‘그린IT’를 실천할 수 있는 대표적인 플랫폼으로 꼽히고 있다” 라며 “한국레드햇 역시 국내 파트너사 및 채널들과의 협력을 강화하여 기업 고객들이 더 많은 혜택을 누릴 수 있도록 최선의 노력을 기울이겠다”고 말했다.
