レッドハット株式会社（東京都千代田区 平野正信社長）は4月16日の米国発表を受け、本日、世界で最も普及しているオープンソースによるサーバオペレーティングシステムの最新バージョン「Red Hat Linux 7.1」を国内でも本年5月11日より発売開始することを発表した。Red Hat Linux 7.1は、インテルマルチプロセッサー・プラットフォーム上で、優れた性能の実現に対し、改善されたSMPサポートを備えた新しい2.4カーネルを含んでいる。
また、今回のバージョンよりシングルバイナリを実現、英語、日本語を始めとした多国籍にわたる言語を扱うことが可能になった。
Red Hat Linux 7.1は、さらにユーザが簡単にDNS、Webおよびプリントサーバをセットアップし運用管理することができる新しいコンフィギュレーションツール を提供する。また、このリリースは、ソフトウェアマネージャーを含んだ、「Red Hat Network」への接続も優れた特長である。（日本国内におけるサービスは現在、準備中です。）
加えて、インストレーションサービスの内容を向上し、パッケージユースに応じたサービスを提供すると同時に、別メニューとして付加価値サービスも用意、よりきめの細かいユーザニーズの対応へ向け、強化を図っている。
Red Hat Linux 7.1の特徴
● カーネル2.4
エンタープライズクラスのオペレーティング・システムとしてRed Hat Linuxを位置付けている。 際立って改善されたマルチプロセッササポート、４ＧＢのユーザプロセス領域の供給、PCI バス限界を排除、効率的な無制限のバーチャルメモリの生成、６４ＧＢの物理RAMのサポート、より多数のユーザ、グループのサポート、より多くのプロセスを処理するためのスケジューラーの修正、マルチスレッドのネットワークスタックと同様、デバイスサポートの増加ならびに改善が施されている。
errata アラートを配信することで、ユーザは自動的に、RPM パッケージの通知を提供する新しいerrataとRPMの更新を通知される。
セキュリティの向上
ポートクローズが保たれ、必要とされるまでインターネットユーティリティがアクティブな状態にしないセッティングがデフォルトで提供されている。新しいファイアウォールスクリーンはユーザにセキュリティ全体のカスタマイズに求められる多くの機能に対するOn/Off設定を可能にしている。
コンフィギュレーションツール
BIND（DNS）、アパッチ、プリントツールでシステムアドミニストレーションがより容易になっている。
インストーラの改善
管理者不在のインストレーションや多数のラップトップユーザへの新しいインストールに対して、グラフィカルなKickstartコンフィギュレーションツールが提供されることで、ユーザの負担が軽減されている。
国際化の向上
日本語、スペイン語、フランス語、ドイツ語、イタリア語に完全に対応したGNOMEインターフェースによりグローバルにユーザをサポート。
デスクトップ機能
ユーザの好みに応じて選択が可能なポピューラーグラフィカル環境であるGNOMEとKDEのアップデート、完全なオープンソースによるWebとメッセージクライアントを提供するMozilla、Webブラウザ、e-mailクライアント、ニュースリーダーをサポート。
