米国ノースカロライナ州ダーハム及びカルフォルニア州サニーベール発
オープンソース・ソリューションのマーケット・リーダーであるRed Hat(R) Inc. (Nasdaq: RHAT、以下レッドハット社) と、Cygnus Solutions (以下シグナス社)は、合併に最終的に合意したことを発表しました。レッドハット社は11月12日金曜日の終値に基き、6億7400万ドルでシグナス社を買収します。この合併により誕生するオープンソースのパワーハウスは、急速に伸びているRed Hat Linux、オープンソース・ソリューションのインターネットやエンタープライズ・アプリケーションでの利用及び、次世代のPCコンピューティングの普及を加速、サポートします。レッドハット社は2000年1月27日に合併手続きの終了を予定しています。
レッドハット社は、合併作業の終了までに、シグナス社の全発行済み株式に対して最高6,624,344株の株式の発行を予定しています。こうした合併作業は、シグナス社の株主による承認、米国の独占禁止改善法に基く条件下での待機期間を経て実行されます。レッドハット社社長 マシュー・ズーリック (Matthuew Szulik) が合併後の新会社の社長兼CEOに就任いたします。
合併によりレッドハット社は、オープンソースのテクノロジー、情報、サービスの提供に特化し、企業向けから組み込み型や携帯型のプラットフォームにわたる、オープンソース・ソフトウェア全般の提供とサポートを行う世界最大の企業となりました。技術に秀でたエキスパート2社が一つになり、Compaq、Dell、IBM、Intel、Hewlett-Packardなど主要なコンピュータ・ベンダとの幅広いパートナーシップにより急速に普及しているオープンソース・ソリューションをサポートすることは、世界中のエンドユーザにも利点があると考えております。

International Data Corporation (IDC)の調査によると、Linuxベースのオペレーション・システム(OS)はサーバーOSとして急速に成長しており、1998年には1年間で190%の成長を遂げています。同年のサーバーOS市場では、440万ドルの売上のうち15.8%以上をしめているとされています。また同社によると、Red Hat LinuxはLinuxユーザの68.7%に支持されている、最も人気のあるディストリビューションとされています。IDC は2002年までに、5,500万台以上の携帯機器やノートブック型の情報機器が出荷され、2005年にはこれらの情報機器がPCの出荷台数を越えると予測しています。
